Chapter Nine

Sleep was not as simple as I put on a bit of baby weight. I woke up more and trying to find a good position was tricky. After a trip to the washroom, I noticed Tish staring out the window. I walked over and heard a soft growl emanating from the cat.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

A large Hulk-like creature stared back at the cat on the other side of the glass. The tall being looked to be made of mud but the eyes glowed. A word in a language I didn’t recognize was etched in its forehead.

“This isn’t real.” I grabbed my phone and checked the security cameras Matt and Gunner had set up. It wasn’t my imagination. The thing really was there.

I took a picture of it and the creature shook its head at the flash. When he focused on me, he bowed his head.

“Crap, this isn’t an angel. I don’t know what it is.” I stroked the cat to calm her down.

The dawn’s first rays began to touch the garden and the creature stepped back into the tall trees. I checked the time and decided if I couldn’t sleep, Paul was getting up early, too.

I shook his arm. “What did you put in the garden?”

“De, not now. Let me sleep,” he grumbled.

“No, I woke up and the cat was staring at a mud creature in the garden. What is it?” I asked.

“Mud creature?” He rubbed his eyes. “It worked?”

“Worked? You spent all that time making a mud Hulk?” I asked. “How? With whom? You don’t have the supernatural juice to do this.”

Finally, he focused on the picture on my phone. “Wow.”

“Wow? Who did this? Who did you get to conjure this thing? How are you going to control that? It’s not like an angel, it can’t just disappear. It’s living out there?” I said.

“Relax. It listens to me,” he said.

“Listens to you? Are you kidding? Paul, I love you and I know you’ve been working with Frankie and Greg to grow your awareness and senses. To increase your self-protection and supernatural gifts, but the isn’t the next level. This is ten levels above. It’s more than I could do.” I shook my head. “This sort of thing takes dark magic or a miracle,” I replied.

“It will obey us, I promise,” he said.

“Let’s see.” I shoved my feet in a pair of gym shoes and grabbed a sweater.

“De, you’re in your nightshirt.” Paul got out of bed and followed me.

“I know, it’s our garden.” It’s not like I was naked.

I walked outside and into the lush garden that always made me sneeze. I wasn’t into nature or the variety of things in my garden. It came with the property and seemed important, living in the Garden District. I had a live and let live relationship with it.

“Now I have a mud Hulk. I really need to know who made this.” I stared up at the creature.

“It’s a golem,” Paul corrected.

The creature bowed its head to us.

“Like in Lord of the Rings?” I asked.
